Fortuna Bay - Reindeer and King penguin

Fortuna Bay in South Georgia Island is a fantastic place. The surrounding landscape is stunning and the King penguin colony / rookery adds to the experience.

Wikipedia: Fortuna Bay is a bay 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, entered between Cape Best and Robertson Point on the north coast of South Georgia Island.

Fortuna bay is also home to some of the reindeers (Rangifer tarandus) introduced to South Georgia Island by Norwegian whalers back in 1911 as a source of meat.

The population of about 2000 animals is a threat to the environment of South Georgia island and the reindeer may be eradicated in the near future.

Until then it is possible to see reindeers walk around among the King penguins.

I hope one day to visit this fantastic place on a day with fine weather. I have been there twice on rainy days.

Both photos are uploaded to Unusual landscape photos by Allan Hansen and can probably be seen at Google Earth sometimes in August 2009.
They are also entered in the monthly Geotagged Photo Contest contest in Panoramio in category "Unusual Unusual Location".
